Michele Carrer, PhDDirector, Department of Neurology at Ionis PharmaceuticalsSpeaker
Profile
Michele obtained his Ph.D. in Genetics and Development form the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Under the mentorship of Dr. Eric N. Olson, Michele studied the role of class I HDACs and microRNAs in the regulation of metabolism and skeletal muscle homeostasis. Michele later completed post-doctoral training at the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation, working on diverse disease areas spanning from atopic dermatitis to cardiac failure. After his post-doc, Michele joined Ionis Pharmaceuticals in Carlsbad, CA, with the goal of developing innovative RNA-targeted therapeutics in the rare disease space. Over the past two years, Michele’s research interest has increasingly focused on correcting the root cause of various neuromuscular disorders, using antisense oligonucleotides to modulate the expression of genetically validated targets in skeletal muscle and other tissues.
