Ben studied Chemistry at the University of Durham, England, doing a PhD in Theoretical and Physical Chemistry. He then joined ICI, UK’s largest chemical company, at their Corporate Research Division.
He was diagnosed with HIV in 2000, and joined his local patient support group, North Yorkshire AIDS Action. He developed an interest in HIV treatment, and joined the UK-CAB in 2002, becoming its Chair in 2003. He is a Community Representative on the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit Patient and Public Involvement Group. He has been a patient representative on clinical trials and writing groups.
