Joan has over 25 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry. She created cell lines expressing all the major BMPs and GDFs while at Stryker Biotech, including developing the companion activity bioassays. While at Johnson & Johnson, she created, qualified and validated both the release bioassay for GDF-5 and the associated neutralization assay for testing patient sera. At J&J she also developed a serum- free process to isolate and maintain human umbilical cord stem cells, and helped develop a DMSO-free cryopreservation formulation for human umbilical-cord stem cells. Joan’s core expertise is cell line development. As head of research at Batavia Biosciences, Inc., she added high-cell-mass electroporation technology (Maxcyte® STX) to BBI’s portfolio. She successfully developed protocols to make high productivity cell lines producing EPO and Factor VIII, enabling clients to fast-track their molecules into proof of concept studies and safety studies by rapidly making large quantities of these biopharmaceuticals.
