Inventor of exon skipping technology
Dr. Kole is currently a consultant to Sarepta Therapeutics a company that recently marketed Exondys 51, a drug for treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. While at Sarpeta (2008-2016) he was SVP Discovery and a Distinguished Scientist. Prior to joining Sarepta he was Professor of Pharmacology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. During his tenure at UNC (1983-2011) Dr.Kole invented and developed a novel technology of oligonucleotide-induced modulation of pre-mRNA splicing and exon skipping and founded Ercole Biotech, which was subsequently acquired by Sarepta.
Dr. Kole received his Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw followed by positions at Yale University at the Departments of Biology and Human Genetics. He co-authored over 100 publications and 41 US patents and patent applications.
