Kurt Klimpel, Ph.D.

Field Application Specialist, Product Development at SGI-DNA


Dr. Klimpel earned his PhD in Molecular Biology from Washington University in 1989 where he delineated the pathways for the pathogenic dimorphism in Histoplama capsulatum.  He was awarded an NRC Postdoctoral Fellowship to work on the mechanism of action for anthrax toxin at the National institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.  There he was able to determine the activation pathway for anthrax toxin, but also several other bacterial toxins.  He was recruited by Biopraxis in San Diego CA as a program manager and lead scientist working on several DARPA grants developing laser based detection systems for biological, chemical and explosive weapons.  Dr. Klimpel joined an aquaculture company as the Director of Research for their vaccine and therapeutic development program.  Dr. Klimpel was a member of the team that took the company public in 2006 and served as the company’s Chief Scientific Officer responsible for the development of vaccines, therapeutics and their transgenic salmon program in Canada, the United States and Panama.  In 2016 Dr. Klimpel joined Synthetic Genomics as a Field Applications Scientist supporting the BioXp technologies.
