Olajide Basorun

Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, Lagos State


Dr. Basorun  Yakub Olajide was born in Surulere, Lagos  on 17th May, 1958 into the Jiyabi Branch of the Eletu Odibo Chieftaincy Family of Isale Eko, Lagos State, Nigeria.

He had his Primary School  Education at Government Demonstration School, Surulere, Lagos between 1964 and 1970. He attended Ansar-Ud-Deen College, Isolo for his Secondary School Education between 1971 and 1975 and thereafter proceeded to the Federal School of Arts and Science, Victoria Island, Lagos for Advance Level Studies between 1975 to 1978. He had his University Education at Dokuchaev Agricultural University, Kharkov, Ukraine between 1979 to 1987 where he obtained his M.Sc and Ph.D degrees in Agriculture.

He joined the service of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria as a Lecturer Grade II in 1989 and got promoted to the post of Lecturer Grade I in 1992. He transferred his service to Lagos State Public Service in February, 1995 as a Chief Agricultural Officer Grade Level 14 and rose through the ranks to the post of a Director Grade Level 17 in 2006.

Some of the responsibilities he has carried out in the Lagos State Public Service include:

  • Head of Agric. Extension Services, Lagos State Agricultural Development Authority, 1995-1999.
  • Acting Deputy Director of Agricultural Services, Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture, July, 1999 – January, 2000.
  • Deputy Director of Agricultural Services, Lagos State Minstry of Agriculture, January ,2000 – April ,2005.
  • Programme Manager, Lagos State Agricultural Development Authority, April 2005 – December, 2010. (The Agric. Extension outfit of the Ministry of Agric and Cooperatives.)
  •  Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture in December, 2010 – February, 2016.
  • Permanent Secretary, Office of Overseas Affairs and Investment (Lagos Global), Feb,2016 –Feb,2017.

Some veritable innovations he has introduced to the development of agriculture in the State are:

  • 1996 -Development of the first computerized ‘farmers register’ in the State.
  • 2001 – Contributed to the development of a concept note for the National Special Programme for Food Security.(NSPFS)
  • 2002 – Compiled a comprehensive database of all Government Controlled  Agric. Land in the State.
  • 2003 – Developed the blueprint for the Ikorodu Fish Farm Estate and pioneered its development.
  • 2008 – Worked with the World Bank Nigeria Country Office to design and package the Commercial Agriculture Development Project (CADP) which is the first locally produced World Bank Intervention Project in Nigeria.
  • 2008 – Developed the blueprint for the Integrated Livestock Extension Programme to rejuvenate the livestock industry after the scrouge of African Swine Fever and Bird flu.
  • 2009 – Assisted the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Lagos State on Special Projects to design and establish the Agric Youth Empowerment Scheme (Agric-YES). A first of its kind in Nigeria.
  • 2011 – Introduced the Agric. Enterprise Estate Initiatives as a strategy to fast track the State’s Agricultural Development.
  • 2012 – Establishment of Lagos State Cooperative College, Agege for the training and development of Cooperative Societies in Lagos and environ.
  • 2012 – Facilitated the establishment of the state owned Integrated Rice Processing Mill, Imota. The first of its kind in South-West, Nigeria.

He is presently the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment.

A practising Fish farmer. He is married with children.
